potty time

Roman has been going pee pee and poo poo in the potty off and on for a long time.  He usually goes in the evening before bath.  I've never put pressure on him, but we've always rewarded with a M&M.  I wouldn't call it potty training, because he always has worn diapers and only would go if he initiated the process.  About a month ago, I felt like he was ready. So I put his big boy mickey mouse underwear on him and told him to let mommy and daddy know if he needed to go.  Well, after the fourth time of peeing in his underwear and saying, "Uh oh, I need a new pair of underwear", we decided he wasn't ready at all!  I put the underwear away and did nothing more.
Two weeks ago, I was browsing babies r us with the kids and Roman randomly announced that he wanted big boy underwear.  We went and looked at them and he picked out the spider man underwear.  I really didn't want to try again so soon, but I figured if he was initiating the process, then I should just go with it.  He only had one accident that day!  He did great for the next few days too!  I still put him in a pull up for nap time and bedtime.  We've been to the gym and church and he's only had one accident so far at church.  He's doing great, but he still has accidents when he's playing hard with his friends.  I mean, who wants to stop and go potty when you could play?!  I've decided that this is probably going to be a long process.  Sometimes Roman will wake up from nap and just not want to put his big boy underwear back on.  I'm just not going to push it too hard right now and go with the flow. (ha - no pun intended).  I certainly don't want to make the process a negative thing.  I don't think he's going to go to kindergarten in diapers!  I'm so proud of his progress so far!  Our baby boy is growing up so fast!!

I'm glad you posted about this. We are in such a similar spot. Mathew has been using the potty for months now, but it is mainly before getting into the bath and usually his own prompting; however, he has NO interest (yet) in big boy underwear. We haven't stressed about it, and we're kind of "following his lead" as well.

He's so cute. I highly recommend the 3daypottytraining.com ebook. Hank had it down very quickly. I watched him like a hawk the first two days, never leaving his side, and we caught every almost accident and made it to the toilet before he went in his underwear. Catching the accidents before they actually happen are key to them figuring out the sensation and getting to the bathroom. Just my 2 cents ;).

Also, before he begins playing with friends, we go to the bathroom. It helps him not have to leave playing to go. So literally when people come over, I say "ok, since we have friends here let's go to the bathroom so you can play!". I tell him it's just " what we do"... Kind of a rule but not in a negative way... Same before getting in the car, etc...
